Breast & Oncology Rehabilitation in Kingston, Ontario

Cancer treatment is hard on the body. Our breast and oncology rehabilitation supports you through and after treatment — restoring shoulder movement, easing cording and stiffness, reducing lymphedema risk, and helping you rebuild strength and confidence at a pace that's right for you.

What Is Breast & Oncology Rehabilitation?

Breast and oncology rehabilitation is physiotherapy focused on the physical effects of cancer and its treatment. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy can all leave their mark — stiffness, weakness, pain, swelling, scarring, and fatigue that linger long after treatment is "done." Rehabilitation helps you address those effects and reclaim movement, strength, and quality of life.

At C.S. Physiotherapy & Wellness Centre, we provide compassionate, individualized care that meets you where you are — whether you're preparing for surgery, recovering in the weeks afterward, in active treatment, or navigating life as a survivor. We work alongside your oncology and surgical team to make sure your program is safe and appropriate for your stage.

How We Can Help

  • Shoulder mobility and strength after breast or axillary surgery
  • Axillary web syndrome ("cording") — the tight, rope-like bands under the arm
  • Scar and soft-tissue mobility, including after reconstruction
  • Lymphedema risk reduction, education, and early management
  • Posture and upper-back pain related to surgery and treatment
  • Cancer-related fatigue and safe, graded reconditioning
  • Bone health and strength during and after hormone therapy
  • Rebuilding overall fitness and confidence with movement

Exercise is part of recovery. Research consistently shows that appropriate, well-guided exercise during and after cancer treatment helps reduce fatigue, maintain strength and bone health, and improve quality of life. The key is a program tailored to you — which is exactly what rehabilitation provides.

Care at Every Stage

Before Treatment (Prehabilitation)

Building strength and mobility before surgery can help you recover more smoothly afterward. Prehabilitation also gives you a baseline and a clear plan so you know what to expect.

During and Soon After Treatment

Once cleared by your surgical team, we work gently on restoring shoulder range of motion, managing cording and scar tissue, and keeping you moving safely through chemotherapy or radiation — adapting to how you feel day to day.

Survivorship

Many effects of treatment surface or persist months later. We help you rebuild strength, manage lingering fatigue or stiffness, monitor for lymphedema, and return to the activities and exercise you love.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first visit is unhurried. We'll talk through your diagnosis, treatments, and goals, and carry out a careful assessment of your movement, strength, posture, and any areas of swelling or tightness. From there we build a plan that respects where you are physically and emotionally — and we adjust it as you progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start rehabilitation?

There's a role for rehabilitation at almost every stage — before surgery, in the weeks after (once your surgical team clears you), during chemotherapy or radiation, and into survivorship. We tailor the plan to your stage and clearance from your care team.

Can physiotherapy help with cording after surgery?

Yes. Axillary web syndrome (cording) responds well to physiotherapy — gentle stretching, manual techniques, and a progressive program typically restore movement and ease the tightness over time.

Will exercise increase my risk of lymphedema?

No — appropriate, gradually progressed exercise is considered safe and is part of lymphedema risk reduction. We educate you on early signs, monitor as you progress, and help coordinate further care if needed.

Is oncology rehabilitation covered by insurance?

Because it's delivered by a registered physiotherapist, it's typically covered under the physiotherapy portion of extended health plans. Coverage varies — call us and we can help you understand what your plan includes.
